Encrypted e-mail provider, Ctemplar, has announced that their site will be closing on May 26, 2023. Although the reason for the closure was not mentioned, one can guess that it could be attributed to the system failure that they suffered. Some customer data had been lost with no recover-ability due to that failure.
The company had issued a blog post asking the current users to migrate to other service providers, and they detailed the steps to do so. The blog post may not load with their website malfunctioning, but they have posted it in their reddit channel here. Customers with prevailing subscriptions were requested to seek refund by contacting support. It was mentioned that the user data will be permanently erased and the service will not be available after the cited date.
It seems that Ctemplar has already deleted their contact details and their social media accounts. With the sudden closure notice and their site not loading in many instances, user’s reaction seems mixed on the closure. While some conveyed that they will have a tough time trusting any company hereon, others extended their empathy. Many users, including myself, were not able to login to to delete their data or to migrate. One cannot escape from having a tad bit of nostalgic sadness and grateful to Ctemplar for their mission of providing an “armored email” solution to its customers, keeping user data secure and protected. However, users who are not able to migrate or who loses their data will be left dejected and betrayed for a long time.
