What is VPN and why do we need it?

VPN stands for “Virtual Private Network”. The advantage of VPN is that it provides us privacy while using public internet. It creates a private network or a tunneled connection between the points that are connected through the VPN. The network or tunnel created is encrypted and cannot be intercepted by attackers or intruders.

It also provides anonymity as it hides the Internet Protocol (IP) address and maintains the privacy of the the user.

Need for VPN as an individual?

Using VPN can be very helpful at an individual level as there always comes a time when we tend to connect to public wireless network, say in an airport or a local cafe or a friend’s house. In such cases, the network may be prone to snooping and eavesdropping as the sites that we browse, or the payment details that we submit may not be encrypted. Even our internet browsing history can be harnessed and used to carry out reconnaisance or targetted attacks against us.
